A Physician Who Specializes in the Hard Cases
Dr. Muhammad Ali Abbas is a triple board-certified interventional psychiatrist. He serves as Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine and at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Jersey. Since August 2023 he has been Vice Chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Director of the Neuromodulation Division, covering both ECT and TMS, at Raritan Bay Medical Center in Perth Amboy.
His training is unusually broad for the work he does. After medical school he completed postdoctoral training in headache and neuromodulation at the University of Pennsylvania, followed by residency in Psychiatry and Human Behavior at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia. He is clinical fellowship trained in chronic pain management and addiction medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, and received his neuromodulation training at Columbia University, NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital.
Dr. Abbas joined Hackensack Meridian Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune in 2012 as Director of Addiction Medicine, running that service for five years. He moved to the Neuromodulation Division in 2017, where he restarted the ECT and TMS services as Director of Neuromodulation, and became the first Director of the Treatment Resistant Mood Clinic at Hope Tower, leading it until July 2023.
Alongside clinical work he has taken part in multiple investigator-initiated and multi-center research trials, and has authored more than 30 peer-reviewed articles. He presents nationally and internationally on addiction and neuromodulation, and teaches both subjects to psychiatry residents and medical students.
