Common Questions, Answered
A few things patients often ask before their first visit. If you don’t see your question here, reach out — we’re happy to help.
What happens at my first appointment?
An initial evaluation runs about 90 minutes. That length is deliberate: it covers your history, current symptoms, previous treatment and medical background properly, so the plan that follows is based on a full picture rather than a rushed intake form.
What should I bring to my first visit?
A photo ID, your insurance card, and a list of current medications (including dosages) are helpful to bring to any first psychiatric appointment.
Do you accept insurance?
Most major insurance plans cover the care we provide, including TMS therapy. We verify your benefits and handle any prior authorization before treatment begins, so you know what your plan covers before you start. Call (732) 426-7030 and we can check your specific plan.
What ages do you treat?
We see adolescents from age 12 and adults.
How soon can I be seen?
Usually the next day. We do not keep a long waiting list, so new patients are typically seen quickly rather than waiting weeks for a first appointment.
Do you prescribe controlled medications such as stimulants?
Yes, where it is clinically appropriate. Controlled medications, including stimulants for ADHD, are prescribed after a full evaluation and with ongoing monitoring, in line with New Jersey prescribing requirements.
What if I need help after hours?
You can call or text (732) 426-7030 and we will get back to you. If you are in immediate danger or thinking about harming yourself, call or text 988 to reach the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, or go to your nearest emergency room.
Is telehealth available?
Yes. Telepsychiatry appointments are available for patients located in New Jersey and New York, where Dr. Abbas is licensed. TMS treatment is delivered in person, but evaluations, medication management and follow-up visits can often be handled by video.
What conditions do you treat?
Care spans psychiatric evaluations, medication management, depression, anxiety and mood disorders, ADHD, and addiction medicine, with particular expertise in depression that hasn’t responded to previous treatment. See our services for the full list.
What is TMS therapy?
Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a noninvasive, non-medication treatment option, especially for treatment-resistant depression. Learn more on the TMS Therapy page.
How do I know if TMS might be right for me?
The best way to find out is a full evaluation with Dr. Abbas. As a starting point, our 2-minute self-assessment can help you think through whether it’s worth a conversation.
I’ve already tried several medications without success — now what?
An inadequate response to previous treatment shouldn’t mean giving up — it should prompt a careful reassessment. Learn more about treatment-resistant depression and the options that may still be available.
Is my information kept confidential?
Your information is handled with the confidentiality patients expect from a psychiatric practice.
How do I schedule an appointment or ask a question?
Use our contact form, or call (732) 426-7030 — our team will follow up to discuss scheduling and next steps.
Still Have Questions?
Our team is happy to talk through your situation directly with you.
Worth a conversation with Dr. Abbas
Based on your answers, TMS therapy may be worth discussing. This isn’t a diagnosis — only a full evaluation can determine if TMS is right for you.
